AEMS Milestones: A Journey Through the Years

1970s

  • 1975: Incorporated as Valley Emergency Medical Services; membership initially limited to hospitals.
  • 1976: Federal funding expands scope; AEMS includes prehospital providers and educators. Gila and Pinal join Maricopa to form Central Region.
  • 1977: Renamed Arizona Emergency Medical Systems, Inc. Governmental partnerships debated (DOT, DHS, DPS?).

1980s

  • 1984–85: All four EMS regions formed in Arizona; EMS Council created. AEMS begins categorizing hospitals by specialty.

1990s

  • 1993: RED Book (Regional EMS Directory) launched, containing standing orders and EMS protocols.
  • AEMS governance and Functional Groups restructured to better represent rural agencies.
  • Regional needs assessments and provider assistance process introduced.

1999

  • Celebrated 25th Anniversary with a commemorative event.
  • Launched the first AEMS website.
  • Initiated stroke center surveys and categorization in Central Region.
